Why is my computer using 50 percent of its ram when sitting idle?

I have 2gb installed on a Windows vista equipped laptop and Kaspersky Virus Software running at all times. I am not a computer person, but this seems like something is hogging a ton of system memory. The system gadget that i have is saying the ram is being used at 49% just when sitting idle and without any programs open. It is not making my computer any slower but I am curious… Thank!!!
