it goes back to his days in cincy. when ever he came to bat, the whole stadium stood up. in the clubhouse, when he talked, everyone stopped talking and listened.
last year, when casey was still with detroit, and 3 years removed from cincy, i went to check out GAB in cincy.
i soon noticed, that the fans that were wearing jerseys…………………the majority of them all had number 21 on the back, not number 3.
that blew me away. the guy was so popular in cincy that 4 years later, most fans still were sporting his jersey and not number 3 griffey jr. who is still on the team and a first ballot hall of fame guy.
that’s why he’s the mayor.
he’s respected by players and fans.
last year, in a player’s poll, he was voted the league’s friendliest player. he knows baseball. he’s great with rooks and vets. fans love him too.
he’s the reason, why i am really starting to disagree with the hall of fame. many guys with great career numbers aren’t in, like santo, tramell, whitaker, rice, blyleven, lee smith and so on.
but a guy like sean casey that outside of a career .300 avg, doesn’t have great numbers, but he makes everyone on his team a better player. if the tigers wouldn’t have traded for him mideason in ‘06, they wouldn’t have had that great post season sucess. that’s what he does. he makes everyone around him better, with his knowledge and tips.
