All depends on much compression you use and the bit rate at which you record your music. I record mine as WMA files at 192 bps, and can’t fit anywhere near as many songs as my daughter, who uses a 64 bps rate for her MP3s. The audio fidelity of mine is much higher, and I prefer that for sampling and mixing, although at my age I probably can’t hear the difference anymore.
Same goes for photographs. I shoot higher resolution images for work that typically require 3-7 mb per shot, and have gotten into the habit of doing the same with my personal photos. Makes it much easier to retain clarity after processing. The price you pay is that they require much more storage space, but the cost of memory is continually declining as the capabilities of even the simplest and cheapest cameras rise.
It wasn’t that long ago that 1.4mb floppy disks represented a huge improvement over the 256kb 7″ disks we were using (in external drives that weighed as much as a good-sized rottweiler). You kids nowadays don’t know how good you’ve got it.
